It’s not too late to get in one of the six “WordShops” being offered on Friday, Oct. 16, in advance of the Louisiana Book Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the State Library of Louisiana, 701 N 4th St.

The WordShops, which will be held in the State Library, the Capitol Park Welcome Center and the Louisiana State Museum, will focus on the process of crafting fiction, freelancing, literature for children, poetry, getting one’s work out there and even screenwriting.

In addition to a learning opportunity, the organizers also view the Wordshops as a networking tool for aspiring writers. No matter how far writers want to take their interest in writing, the workshops are meant for everyone.

Those interested in participating in the writing workshops can register by calling Alison Foster at (225) 342-4923. The registration fee is $40 for half-day or $75 for full-day, depending on the workshop; for a person attending two half-day workshops, the fee is $75. Registration and payment are due by Monday, Oct. 12, but one can still get into one of the classes if there are remaining vacancies.

The WordShops are:

  • “Writing in Color: Making Writing Come to Life,” with Rick Bragg, full-day, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • “The Illustrated Story: Writing and Illustrating a Children’s Picture Book,” with Alex Beard, half-day, 9 a.m.-noon
  • “If I Can, You Can: War Stories from 30 Years on the Road to a First Novel,” with Sonny Brewer, half-day, 9 a.m.-noon
  • “Writing Poetry’s Landscape of Memory and Place,” with Jeanie Thompson, half-day, 9 a.m.-noon
  • “Freelance Journalism for Fun and Profit,” with Dan Baum, half-day, 1-4 p.m.
  • “Screenwriting 101,” with Toni McGee Causey, half-day, 1-4 p.m.

Archaeology Month

The Zachary Branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, 1900 Church St. in Zachary, will be holding two archaeology programs in October to celebrate Louisiana Archaeology Month.

Learn about Louisiana’s rich archaeological heritage at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Archaeologists from URS Corp. will talk about archaeological methodology and archaeology in Louisiana. They will also have artifacts from their collection for participants to view. This program is open to adults, teens, and children, ages 8 and up.

Discover how archaeologists learn about the past and take part in a simulated archaeological survey at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Children, ages 8 and up, will survey a pretend site, draw the artifacts that they find on a map, and analyze their findings. Registration is required for this program.

For more information and to register, call (225) 658-1860.

Delve into the past during Louisiana Archaeology Month with two archaeological events at the Lafayette Public Library South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston St. in Lafayette.

Dr. Jamie Brandon of the Division of Louisiana Archaeology will share with the public what he’s learned from nearly a decade of research on a small sawmill town in the Arkansas Ozarks. Founded in the 1850s, the town of Van Winkle’s Mill had vanished by 1900, but much remains to be discovered and learned from what was once a living community.
