Author Ellen Gilchrist will be in New Orleans for a book event at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 925 Camp St.

Gilchrist has captured the essence of love, longing and life through her short stories, poetry, novels and essays. A native of Mississippi who now lives in Arkansas, she won the National Book Award for Fiction (1984) for Victory Over Japan, a collection of short stories. Her novels include The Annunciation and The Cabal.

This event is presented by the Kohmeyer Circle, a group of young arts and cultural enthusiasts who creatively support the arts. Admission is free to museum members and $10 for nonmembers.

Call Stephanie Spicer at (504) 539-9618 for information or to reserve a spot.

Author talks on DVD
At the 2008 Louisiana Book Festival, Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) taped seven separate author book talks that were subsequently edited and broadcast on LPB in March. LPB edited these author presentations down to approximately 30-minute episodes, now available on DVD.

The Louisiana Center for the Book is pleased to make these DVDs available through interlibrary loan from the State Library of Louisiana. These programs can serve as an excellent complement to reading and discussion groups, or as stand-alone programs for the public to hear the featured authors discuss their work.

The DVDs feature the following authors and their books:

  • Rick Bragg, The Prince Of Frogtown
  • John Dufresne, Requiem, Mass.: A Novel
  • Michael Gates Gill, How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live like Everyone Else
  • Immaculée Ilibagiza, Led by Faith: Rising from the Ashes of the Rwandan Genocide
  • William Joyce, 2008 Louisiana Writer Award Recipient, discussing his life and career as a children’s author and illustrator.
  • Julia Reed, Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns, and Other Southern Specialties: An Entertaining Life, with Recipes, and The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story
  • George Singleton, Pep Talks, Warnings, and Screeds: Indispensable Wisdom and Cautionary Advice for Writers

The DVD featuring Bragg and Dufresne in separate segments runs approximately an hour, but each section could be shown individually.

The DVDs may be used by libraries, teachers, educators, educational institutions, and similar organizations for educational purposes; no admission may be charged to view such programs.

These programs are scheduled for rebroadcast on LPB2 in September; watch the listings for dates and times: http://www.lpb.org.
