Covington to mark Bastille Day with free celebration July 11
The third annual Bastille Day Celebration will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in downtown Covington.
The St. Tammany Art Association and Covington Association of Retailers sponsors this event, which is filled with art, culture, music and shopping with a French flair. The celebration is free.
The event usually draws some 3,000 visitors to the historic St. John district with special sales at participating businesses, new work by dozens of artists from around the southeast region and musical performances by local and nationally-known musicians.
Also included will be live music at various outdoor and indoor locations, art demonstrations, boutique shopping and fine dining at an array of participating establishments, as well as special musical performances. There also will be a waiter’s race and an 8-foot Eiffel Tower constructed of spaghetti.
In conjunction with Bastille Day festivities, the Cultural Alliance of the Americas, whose mission is to explore the cultural connections that contributed to the area’s “gumbo” heritage, in cooperation with the St. Tammany Art Association, and Ecos Latinos, will present “Habañera Jazz.”
The concert celebrating the music of New Orleans and Honduras will be at the Fuhrman Auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday, July 10. Featured will be musicians Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders, Angel Rios, and Bodoma Garifuna of Honduras with Patrice Fisher and band.
Tickets are $20.
