Panel event at Ogden includes readings, signings

Join Louisiana writers John Biguenet and Tim Gautreaux at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, for a panel discussion at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 925 Camp St. in New Orleans.

Moderator for the panel will be Chris Rose. The event will includes readings and a booksigning. Biguenet is the author of Oyster; The Torturer’s Apprentice, a collection of short stories; and two plays, Rising Water and Shotgun. Gautreaux, whose most recent novel is The Missing, is also known for his short stories.

This event is presented by the Kohlmeyer Circle, a group of young arts and cultural enthusiasts who creatively support the arts.

At EBR Parish Library

New Main Library Focus Groups —Local children and teens are invited to be part of a focus group for the new Main Library. Members of The Library Design Collaborative will be at the Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd., on Tuesday, June 9, to solicit input and share ideas for the new Main Library in the Park. The children’s focus group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon and the teen focus group will meet from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Snacks will be provided.

Space Fun — Children, ages 5 to 11, can visit the stars with MARS. Chris Kersey, the manager of the Highland Road Park Observatory, will give tours of MARS, the Mobile Astronomy Resource System. Children can look through an optical telescope for solar viewing, view space displays, and participate in demonstrations. Participants will also receive a special bracelet that changes color in the sunlight. For more information, call the individual branch:

Storytelling
West Baton Rouge Parish Library is sponsoring The Healing Force, a family of performers from Winston Salem, N.C., who will present “Rhythm of the Drum,” a lively, colorful, 60-minute celebration of West African music and storytelling.

The programs will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Port Allen Community Center, 749 N Jefferson Ave. in Port Allen, and at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Dow Westside YMCA, 3688 Sugar Plantation Parkway in Addis.

The library will also host “Monsters, Dragons & Ogres” telling stories of their wild, adventurous lives with a little help from storyteller superstar Bobby Norfolk at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, at the library, 830 N. Alexander St. in Port Allen, and at 1 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Dow Westside YMCA.

At Ascension Parish Libraries
Medieval Faire: Step back in time to the days of kings, knights, peasants and jesters when the Ascension Parish Library hosts its first-ever Medieval Faire. The festivities start at 10 a.m. with a visit from Renaissance Living History Center as they teach us about the lives and jobs of the 16th century. After the presentation, participants can build their own pieces of armor, have their faces painted, participate in fun games, and more.

Medieval Faire workshops are scheduled as follows: Monday, June 8, in Galvez, 40300 La. 42 in Prairieville; Tuesday, June 9, 500 Mississippi St. in Donaldsonville; and Thursday, June 11, at 708 South Irma Blvd. in Gonzales. All Medieval Faire events start at 10 a.m. This program is open to children of all ages.

Snap and Write: The Ascension Parish Library is offering another program for teens featuring creative writing and photography. Teens are invited to bring their digital camera or favorite picture to the Ascension Parish Library. During this four-week series, teens will use their photography to write their own original stories or poems under the guidance of creative writing instructor Cynthia Artigue. A reception featuring teen photographs and writings will be held following the conclusion of each Snap & Write workshop series. Space is limited.
