‘Majesty 2’ a worthy sequel
Moments into playing "Majesty 2," a delicious smile crosses my face.
"I'm melting," the wizard croaks out with his last breath.
No, I’m not sadistic. Most sequels end up ruining what made the original game so darn enjoyable. "Majesty 2," however, includes all of the sarcasm and wit of its predecessor with a little extra pizzazz.
“Majesty 2” is a fantasy kingdom sim that puts you in the role of a wannabe king. While you cannot directly control your subjects, you can inspire them to do your bidding by placing various monetary bounties on objectives. Want your heroes to take care of those pesky wolves that keep eating your tax collectors? Then place a bounty flag on the wolves den and watch them destroy it.
The campaign for “Majesty 2” is fun and involving. You start out with the tutorial and progress through various missions. From defeating an evil wizard to slaying an invincible dragon, the missions are all humorously straight from the 'Fantasy 101' guide book. Each mission is introduced by a suave, old English gentleman who will probably get a grin out of you, but only if you are patient enough to listen to the narrative.
"Majesty 2" has also been upgraded from the original 2D title into 3D. Its color pallet is bright and cheery, and the general user interface is easy to navigate and pleasing to the eye. The characters--from heroes to peasants--are nicely modeled and textured, and the animations are exceptionally done.
Unfortunately, the creatures that players defend against and actively seek out to exterminate are rather bland. Very few critters are unique or out of the norm for a stock fantasy title.
The sounds within the game, on the other hand, are a joy. The music is catchy and heroic, and not once did I feel the inclination to turn the volume down or off. The sound effects and voice acting for the characters are also hysterical. Your heroes will always have something to say that’s guaranteed to put a smile to your face.
There is a patch available for the game and it is recommended you apply it before playing. The patched version is extremely stable and did not crash or have any slow downs whatsoever.
This game also gives you the option to play alone or in multiplayer mode. Multiplayer can be online or via a local area network (LAN). LAN works fine and there were no issues at all with the computers finding each other. During multiplayer you can play against each other or together against the computer, depending on the type of map that is selected. I found the number of maps very limited, and started wishing for a map editor after the fourth scenario. Hopefully, we will see one in the future.
All in all, "Majesty 2" is a worthy successor to the original title. It is well worth purchasing and would definitely make a great addition to any fantasy gaming collection.
