'Tennis Titans' a simple, yet entertaining game

“Tennis Titans” is a simple, fun, fast-paced tennis game for any member of the family.

The game has seven characters that you can unlock through winning matches. After defeating each of the zany characters, you can then choose to play as that character. A nice perk is you don’t have to start your tournament mode over if you want to switch to a different character.

“Tennis Titans” has two different game modes you can play, Tournament mode and Rings mode. The Tournament system is basic and requires you to beat your opponents in a best-of-three match system. Each court has four opponents you must defeat.

The Rings mode is much more involved and quite fun. The objective in Rings mode is to hit various rings and powerups that are floating around the tennis court to add points to the point holder. The catch is the points are awarded to whoever wins the game point. Each time you serve the ball, the point holder is reset to zero.

I wish that the game had a few more tennis court locations to offer, but the four that the game does have are interesting and fun. Playing a match on a huge tree trunk is good fun.

The graphics work well for the game, and the characters are lively and well-animated. Each character has its own animations and whacky comments. X-IT is probably my favorite, with his random mainstream science fiction quips and noises.

Even though the overall enjoyment of the game is good, “Tennis Titans” had a few minor issues. First, the Starforce copy protection system is used. This program is known to cause problems associated with computer errors and crashes.

The other problem was the explosion powerup in Rings mode, which causes a large slowdown in the game performance when you hit it. The game actually slows down as the explosion and smoke goes off, then resumes at full speed after a second or two. This causes a noticeable disruption in the game flow.

There is an online ranking system in place for those that like a more global challenge. While the game isn’t multiplayer, it does have a ranking system to see who can get the highest scores.

Good simple fun is what “Tennis Titans” is all about. Easy-to-use controls allows many types of gamers to get into the goofy and fast action.
