Crosby, Stills & Nash
DEMOS
Crosby, Stills and Nash brought singer-songwriters from successful American bands the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield and England’s Hollies together in the late ’60s for a super trio. The addition of Neil Young knocked the group’s already high talent quotient even higher. Rich harmony singing was among the trio and quintet’s greatest assets, but harmony is a rarity on Demos.
Most of these recordings, just as you’d expect of demos, are voice and acoustic guitar renderings (and one instance of voice and piano). As such, the songwriting comes to the fore. David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash are each wonderfully distinct composer-lyricists who, though it’s not heard in these mostly solo recordings, found a rare blend together, the unembroidered foundation of which Demos showcases.
