Baton Rouge Beach:
901 Stanford Ave. Free access to the beach located on the LSU Lake, adjacent to campus in Stanford Park.
Baton Rouge Zoo:
3601 Thomas Road, 225-775-3877. Open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily (6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays during daylight savings time). Admission $6 adults and teens, $5 seniors, $3 children age 2 to 12, free for children 1 and under.
Blackwater Conservation Area:
Located near the intersection of Hooper and Blackwater roads, along the Comite River. The area has two large fishing lakes on 63 acres of newly revived land. 225-757-8905.
Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center:
10503 N. Oak Hills Parkway, off Bluebonnet Boulevard. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission $3 adults age 18 to 64, $2.50 seniors, $1.50 college students with I.D., $2 children age 3 to 17, free for children age 2 and under. 225-757-8905.
BREC/LSU/BRAS Highland Road Park Observatory:
13800 Highland Road. Tuesday-Thursday hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday 3-9:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (reopens 5:30-9:30 p.m.). Closed Sunday and Monday. Free Friday night programs. Saturday morning science programs allow children hands-on astronomy activity.
Farr Park Horse Activity Center and Campground:
6400 River Road. Free to the public, but spectator admission is charged for a selected number of special events. Fees are charged for horse boarding and horseback riding lessons. Also available is a campground with 79 sites. 225-769-7805.
