Theater hosting ‘Bats in Belfry’
OPELOUSAS — They’re music teachers, they’re unmarried, and all four spinster sisters — who happen to be witches — are purt-near nutty in “Bats in the Belfry,” a comedy-mystery-fantasy play appearing at the Opelousas Little Theater at 7 p.m. today.
“Belfry” also plays Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. It continues Oct. 29-31, with each performance at 7 p.m. An additional matinee is set for Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m.
The setting is the Ogilvy Conservatory of Music for Girls, director Walter Duncan McBride said Thursday.
“I call it a comedic thriller,” he said. “But I think it’s more on the comedic side. The story is of four witches whose young ward, Pamela, returns with her fiancé. Then things get weird.”
“Weird” means magic and mirth, with the invisible turning visible, he said.
Cast and crew number about 20. The main characters, the sisters, are being played by Susie Doucet, Cindy Pitre, Annette Ortego and Cindy Mattei.
McBride, an Opelousas resident who is directing his first play but said he has done several musical productions, also offered a hint about the none-too-stable sisters in “Bats in the Belfry.”
“Actually,” McBride said, chuckling, “ ‘bats in the belfry’ is an old saying. It means crazy, basically. And these characters (four main actresses) are all crazy in real life, as well. And you can quote me!”
Tickets are available at Sebastien-Dupré Fine Jewelry, 822 S. Main St. in Opelousas. Call (337) 948-4367 for tickets and directions.
