Baton Rouge native Katie East will be teaching improv workshops for teens and adults on Thursday, Oct. 29, and Monday, Nov. 2, in the Runnels High School Theatre. Cost is $20 per person for a three-hour session.

The class for teenagers will be 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 29, and is available for anyone in grades 9-12.

The adult class will be 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 2, and is for performers only.

This workshop is an introduction to long-form improvisation using principles taught by the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City.

This company was the training ground for such performers as Saturday Night Live alumnus Amy Poehler.

East performs improv and stand-up comedy in New York City. She started improvising in Baton Rouge in high school. She has trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater since 2007.

Her independent long-form team Froduce has performed nearly 100 shows since May 2006, including the Del Close Marathon and UCB Cagematch. East has performed improv and stand-up in many different theaters in New York City, including the UCB, the Magnet and the PIT.

The workshop for teenagers is open to any high school student who is interested in stage performance or comedy or just wants to have fun.

The class is a general improvisation workshop that will focus on getting comfortable performing and thinking on your toes.

The adult workshop is specifically for performers. This is a rare opportunity to learn long-form improvisation principles and forms not normally taught in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. This workshop is recommended for stage and commercial actors who are interested in learning improvisation techniques to help their craft. The class is for adults 18 and up and may contain adult themes.

East is originally from Baton Rouge and has been living in New York City since early 2007. She graduated from LSU in December 2006 with a bachelor of art degree in mass communication, specializing in advertising, and a minor in theater. She attended Runnels High School and graduated in 2002.
