State Archives marking month with several events
Al Lavergne, former head of the Southern University Art Department, will present a virtual tour of the historic panels he designed for the façade of the Louisiana State Archives building 10-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at the Archives, 3851 Essen Lane.
The presentation is part of Archives Month.
Other key events include Louisiana Women in History, a living presentation by Elizabeth Dent, a civic activist and former radio program host, on Thursday, Oct. 15, and the Genealogy Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
All parish genealogical organizations are invited to participate in the conference by selling their books and brochures.
Jim Engster with WRKF-FM will broadcast from the Archives building on Thursday, Oct. 22, with a political panel that will highlight political history as well as insights into present and future political events in Louisiana. Danny Plaisance, owner of Cottonwood Books in Baton Rouge, will discuss the popularity of rare books and focus on their importance in preserving Louisiana history 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.
To wrap up Archives Month at noon Thursday, Oct. 29, Secretary of State Jay Dardenne will present Ghosts of Louisiana’s Political Past in conjunction with a Friends appreciation luncheon. The Friends of the Louisiana State Archives was established to assist the Archives staff with its many activities. Support and encouragement of interesting historical activities to a diverse public is its priority.
Tours of the Archives are available upon request. Archives hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is free and the building is wheelchair accessible.
