The Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra will perform an evening of thrills and chills in the second concert of its 2009-2010 Entergy Masterworks season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the River Center for the Performing Arts, 220 St. Louis St.
Featured soloists will be cellist Amit Peled and violinist Ilya Kaler.
And what could serve more perfectly as the entree to the Halloween season than the symphony’s opener, Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain? That’s the chilling part of the program.
Next come the thrills with Richard Strauss’ Don Juan, a piece that depicts the restless romantic hero in his quest for ill-fated love.
And finally, come the treats, when the symphony welcomes back guest artists Peled and Kaler, performing Brahms’ Double Concerto, a piece that showcases the harmony and endless possibilities that only such a collaboration can provide.
Peled has performed in the world’s major concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus in Berlin and Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium.
As a recording artist, Peled will release his CD, The Jewish Soul, on Centaur Records this season.
He also has been featured on television and radio stations throughout the world.
Kaler also has performed throughout the world as a soloist and with orchestras. He served as a concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has been a professor of violin at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Ind., and is a Professor of Violin at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, Ill.
