OK, it’s understandable. Cordell Haymon’s wearing a crown and cape, he’s holding a scepter.

And he just can’t help himself.

“It feels appropriate,” he said. “I’m getting the royal treatment I’ve always deserved.”

Jacqui Vines can’t help rolling her eyes. It’s in jest, not contempt. For she, too, is wearing a crown and cape.

And she also will be receiving the royal treatment when she and Haymon reign as queen and king over the Laurel Street Lollapalooza on Friday, Jan. 9.

Haymon calls it the best party in town. Vines says it’s for a good cause. And, really, it’s both, for the Arts Council of Greater Rouge’s headquarters at 427 Laurel St. will be the site for the biggest street party in town. Yes, tickets will be required, but, as Vines pointed out, it’s for a good cause — all proceeds go to the arts council.

This is the council’s annual fundraiser, and money from this event will be used to fund its arts education in schools and through the Community School for the Arts, along with its support of artists and arts organizations in the 11 parishes it serves.

And though this is Lollapalooza’s ninth year, there’s something special about this year’s party.

“It’ll be the last Lollapalooza on Laurel Street,” said Katherine Scherer, the arts council’s deputy director. “We’ll be in our new headquarters in the Shaw Center for the Arts next year.”

A definite date has yet to be set for the arts council’s move.

“We just know that we’re moving to the Shaw Center some time this year,” Scherer said. “So, we’re excited about this year’s Lollapalooza.”

The Laurel Street Lollapalooza is a street party that celebrates the arts in Baton Rouge with lively bands and entertainment, a silent auction, food and beverages.

Scheduled performers are the Michael Foster Project playing brass band and jazz; Artemis, playing popular music; King James, also playing popular music; guitarist Jeffrey George; and guitarist-vocalist Kirk Holder.
