Art event will aid Food Bank; trio of artists will show work at BR Gallery

The fourth annual Art for Food — Art for Every Budget begins with a silent auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, on the grounds of Burns and Co. Realtors Inc.’s Highland Road office at the gates of the Country Club of Louisiana, 17400 Memorial Ave.

The event is hosted by Burns and Co. The live auction will begin at 7 p.m.

The event is a benefit to kick off the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank’s 2008 Summer Appeal. This year’s featured artist is Louis DeAngelo Sr., a New Jersey native, who describes himself as a modern avant-garde artist.

Attendees are invited to view artwork and enjoy complimentary wine, soft drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event is free.

The silent auction will include items donated by local businesses and restaurants. The live auction will feature artwork donated by many well-known artists in the area.

The Food Bank’s Summer Appeal is critical as it is usually a time of severe shortage at the food bank. In its 11-parish service area, more than 45,000 children live in poverty and experience hunger on a daily basis. During summer break, children do not receive the free or reduced breakfast and lunch that they typically receive through the National School Lunch Program. This factor combined with the decline of donations to the food bank in the summer months presents a great challenge for the food bank to adequately supply the needs of families in its service area.

At LSU galleries
Master of fine arts thesis printmaking exhibitions for Renee Smith and Emily Cook will be Monday, April 28, through Friday, May 9, at the LSU School of Art Gallery in Foster Hall on campus. There will be a reception 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 9.

Smith’s exhibit, Renée Smith: Nature vs. Nurture deals with how human nature is not so nurturing in plant form. These mean green plants are not the typical types that just sit around in a garden to look pretty. This exhibition includes mezzotints, drawings and large format silk-screens.

Cook’s exhibition, Emily Cook: Drift is an installation of handmade paper boats and forests that use the properties of paper to evoke evidence of the passage of time, of journeys traveled and things lost and gained.

Master of fine arts thesis exhibitions by Jenny Gawronski and Ezra Kellerman will show at the Alfred C. Glassell Jr. Exhibition Gallery in the Shaw Center, 100 Lafayette St.

Both exhibits will run Monday-Saturday, April 28-May 3. There also will be a reception 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 2.

Gawronski’s exhibit, Jenny Gawronski: A Sweeter Life: A Celebration of Desserts is a collection of ceramic table settings that are specifically for serving desserts. At the closing reception exquisite desserts from Sucre, a sweet boutique in New Orleans, will be served.
