Photographs by legendary New Orleans pianist Henry Butler will be on exhibit through May 24 in the Jones Walker Foyer Gallery of the Manship Theatre inside the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette St.
The exhibit is the second in a series of events sponsored by Brunner Gallery and Manship Theatre, celebrating collaborations between the performing and visual arts.
On Friday, April 25, Butler will perform in the Manship Theatre as part of Baton Rouge Blues Week. Brunner Gallery will host the photo exhibition, which may be viewed on the evening of the performance.
Butler exhibits his photographs around the country. He lost his sight to glaucoma at a young age. For Butler, the process of taking images with his digital camera is intuitive in the selection of subject and conceptual in the process of editing the images based on feedback from known and unknown viewers. With a photographic assistant, he creates images which possess a surreal, otherworldly quality. Well known for his musical talent, Butler ventures into contemporary art in a unique and thoughtful way.
On exhibit will be never-before-seen images from Butler’s Hawaii Series and a collection of images of world famous musicians who have collaborated with him.
