Works by Lemoine, Johnson at Caffery Gallery captivating
Caffery Gallery, 4016 Government St., shifts the paintings on display each week to provide variety and public interest as well as to present work of a variety of artists during the spring months.
Showing through April is a varied collection by some of the city’s best artists. A sweeping trio of paintings by Kathleen Lemoine presents the landscape as a sea of green, with a black dog as the accent for each painting. Her ability to express loneliness and isolation from the world continues to dominate her work and the dog’s presence doesn’t make a difference, for the animal seems as lost and lonely as the viewer. The all-green landscape is mysterious and haunting but captivating to the senses.
One of the great treats in this exhibit is a pair of beautiful oval paintings by Libby Johnson. The works are landscapes—with a vast sky and rolling sea, each presented with marvelous form and color—a slender line of landscape with incredibly perfect detail.
A lush spray of white and yellow blossoms in a crystal vase is also Johnson’s work, a classic study created with so much skill that it defies description and makes similar works, painted with less emotion, fade into nothing.
It’s obvious that the gallery presents some of the best art on the contemporary Baton Rouge scene, and the “spring break” period is no exception.
