And he wanted more. He began buying them from the Vivian Alexander catalog, but that wasn’t enough. So, he called Caldwell.
“I asked Alex if he had any more eggs in his studio, because I wanted to buy them all,” Cutrer said. “He thought it was a joke at first. I mean, I’m a guy from Port Allen, and here I was calling to buy all of his eggs.”
But Caldwell learned soon enough that this was no joke. He drove from Maurice to Port Allen. The two instantly struck a bond. That was 13 years ago.
Now Cutrer looks to the future, hoping to instill the same love of art into his sons Evan, 10, and Price, 9.
“I want them to see the value in these pieces, and if they decide not to keep them, maybe they’ll donate them to a museum one day,” Cutrer said. “We’re exposing them to all of these things, and they’re growing up around it. My hope is that they develop a love for it.”
For love makes all the difference. Even in collecting.
Especially in collecting.
