Spindler to lead mystery discussion

Have you ever imagined that you could be the world’s next great mystery writer? Join Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Barnes & Noble at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at Barnes & Noble, 2590 Citiplace Court, for a special discussion about the mysteries of Agatha Christie and what makes a good mystery.

The discussion will be led by best-selling author and award-winning mystery writer Erica Spindler. Spindler, who lives in Mandeville, is the author of the best-sellers Dead Run, Bone Cold, All Fall Down and Cause for Alarm. Her latest book, Breakneck, made the New York Times Best Sellers list for fiction. The event is free and open to the public.

Masterpiece Mystery! is premiering new episodes of Miss Marple all month at 8 p.m. Sundays. The series stars British actress Julia McKenzie, last seen in the Emmy-winning Masterpiece series Cranford.

Jazz poet at library

Spoken word jazz poet Arthur Pfister, who performs as Professor Arturo, will be at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Boulevard, at 3 p.m. today, July 12. Pfister’s book, My Name is New Orleans, reflects a lifetime immersed in the city’s humor, pathos and idiosyncrasies.

Professor Arturo will perform selections from this collection and will sign copies of the book, which will also be on sale.

An original Broadside Press poet of the 1960s, Pfister was a fixture on the New Orleans poetry scene until 2005 when he relocated to Connecticut due to Hurricane Katrina. He continues to be a strong and passionate voice for the city of New Orleans. His work has been published in numerous publications including The American Poetry Review, Ebony Magazine and The New Orleans Tribune.

Welty birthday

In honor of the centennial of Eudora Welty’s birth, Brannon Costello will present a program focusing on Welty’s work at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Jones Creek Regional Branch, 6222 Jones Creek Road.

Costello will spotlight The Golden Apples and other collections of Welty’s short stories. The program is free but registration is required.

Costello is an assistant professor in the English department at LSU. He specializes in American literature, southern studies, and comic and graphic novels.

Swamp magic
Discover the magic of the Atchafalaya at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Zachary Branch, 1900 Church St., at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16.

Charles Fryling Jr. will talk about the animal and plant life found in the Atchafalaya Basin as he shows a slide show of more than 80 photographs of the area. An exhibit of Fryling’s photography will also be on display at the Zachary Branch during July. Fryling is an associate professor with the LSU Department of Landscape Architecture. He is also involved with several nature conservation organizations and has done numerous photography studies of the Atchafalaya. For more information, call (225) 658-1840.
