New Orleans sizzles with Satchmo SummerFest
New Orleans sizzles with more than summer heat in August. The music scene is as hot as ever, especially during the annual Satchmo SummerFest taking place today through Sunday, Aug. 3.
The jazz festival dedicated to the life, music and legacy of the city’s native son Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong centers around the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U. S. Mint. Sponsored by New Orleans Festivals Inc, the event is free to the public.
Four stages on the grounds of the Mint will feature traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, brass bands and the return of the children’s stage with family activities. This year, the event also celebrates the completion of the Mint’s Hurricane Katrina repairs, including the completion of the building’s copper roof.
Appearing will be numerous performers, including Dr. Michael White, Connie Jones Crescent City Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band with tribute to John Brunious, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, Chris Clifton and His Allstars, Tim Laughlin, Soul Rebels, Leah Chase, Treme Brass Band, VaVaVoom, Phillip Manuel, Storyville Yosio Toyama and the Dixie Saints from Japan, Stompers Brass Band, Magnetic Ear, and others.
Inside the Old U.S. Mint, speakers will present seminars, discussions, music and movies. Among those featured will be recording industry icon George Avakian, Michael Cogswell of the Armstrong House and Archives, and trumpeter and researcher Peter Ecklund.
More than 25 food and beverage booths will offer New Orleans cuisine, drinks and snowballs.
Activities today kick off at 10:30 a.m. with the Satchmo Birthday Party in Armstrong Park, 901 N. Rampart St. Seminars in the Old U.S. Mint run 2:30-5:30 p.m. today. The Satchmo Club Strut, sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration, starts at 6 p.m. with the Rebirth Brass Band strolling along the Frenchmen Street corridor in front of participating jazz clubs. Wristband for general admission to the clubs costs $25 (general), and $75 (VIP) admission.
Saturday hours around the U.S. Mint are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday activities start at 10 a.m. with a jazz Mass in St. Augustine Catholic Church, followed by a second line parade to the Old U.S. Mint. Music and seminars will continue until 7 p.m.
