Table talk for Oct. 15, 2009
I love the taste of Jazz, New Zealand’s new apple variety now available in many supermarkets. The apple is tart, sweet, dense and very crisp. It’s a workout for your front teeth when you first bite into the pretty red apple.
If you have not tasted a Jazz apple and you like sweet, tangy apples, do try one. The flesh is butter yellow, and there is a yellow striping to the red exterior. A blend of the Royal Gala and Braeburn apples, the Jazz apple has been described as having an effervescent taste.
While shopping for apples last week at Hi Nabor, I noticed a shelf display of canned O’sage peaches. I really like peaches and had some pretty disappointing ones this summer — tough and mealy, no flavor and no juice. The peaches can label convinced me to give the peaches a try.
The brand is Margaret Holmes O’sage Peaches Raggedy Ripe Freestone. The peaches are further identified as being “The Georgia Peach.” The can contained halves and pieces in heavy syrup. Cost was $1.85 for a 29-ounce can.
On the can’s label was a recipe for a special Margaret Holmes dessert. I made the dessert with the canned peaches and hope I get back to Hi Nabor for more peaches before the store sells out.
