When I got the note from Hunter Barrilleaux saying simply, “Well, Ole Miss finally got that second back,” I knew exactly what he was talking about.

And football fans of a certain age will know, too.

Back in 1972, LSU defeated Ole Miss 17-16 on a Bert Jones pass to Brad Davis with no time left on the clock.

The loss has rankled Ole Miss fans ever since, who accuse the Tiger Stadium timekeeper of being a little slow on the draw, and maintaining that Bert couldn’t have gotten the play off in 1 second without some help from the clock.

After the game, Coach Charles McClendon said of the close call, “I’d rather fight any football team in America than that clock. That clock, fellows, just doesn’t give you any consideration.”

Yeah, sometimes you beat the clock and sometimes the clock beats you…

Spirits of Christmas

Pat Bourg says, “Years ago, my mom made date loaf, whiskey balls and icebox fruit cake as part of her Christmas goodies.

“She always shared her most embarrassing moment as being ‘When your brother told the Boy Scouts his favorite part of Christmas was whiskey balls!’ ”

Welcome visitors

“Just wanted to share my excitement!” says Cecile Gauthreaux of Brusly:

“As I was crossing the LSU Lakes last week, I was treated to a show!

“Our seasonal visitors, the white pelicans, were swarming above!
