Kathleen Talmadge came across a story about famed New Orleans chef John Besh in the October issue of Men’s Health magazine:

“He lost his restaurant in Katrina. The power was out and people were desperately hungry. He packed up a boat with a large container of red beans and rice, grabbed a shotgun and headed out into the watery wasteland.

“ ‘The first guy I served my red beans and rice to — you know what he tells me? He says they’re not as good as his mother’s,’ Besh recalls.

“ ‘When I heard that, I knew the city was going to make  it.’ ”

Out of the swamp

Jim McCormack, maitre d’ at The Patio Lounge, says an “All Swamp Team” was featured in the New York Daily News.

It consists of Giants and Jets players who performed at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands — 33 years for the Giants, 25 for the Jets.

Says Jim, “Our own Dan Alexander, owner of Nick’s in Plaquemine, was one of the players named.”

Dan was a guard for the Jets in 1984-89.

Named center on the all-star team was Kevin Mawae of the Jets, an LSU star.

Other team members include Phil Simms, Tiki Barber, Michael Strahan and Lawrence Taylor of the Giants and Curtis Martin and Mark Gastineau of the Jets.

Neat trick

Tom Sylvest Jr. says the Auburn-LSU game statistics in Sunday’s sports section listed LSU reserve quarterback Jarrett Lee as having attempted one pass and completing three:
