Dear Smiley: My husband grew up in Indiana. He says he does not need a hearing aid — my Mississippi accent is the problem.
Recently, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri was honored by his Lafayette fans. I called the office where we work part time to say we would be late.
The secretary who answered the phone is from the Philippines.
I said, “Please tell our daughter that we will be late because we are at a Paul Mainieri luncheon.”
In a few minutes my cell phone rang. Our daughter said, “Are you two all right? Why are you at a pulmonary function?”

Geography lesson
Dear Smiley: Back in the ’50s, I was having a discussion with a co-worker at Spring’s Esso on St. Ferdinand Street about fast drivers when he said, “I know a guy who’ll race you anywhere. He’ll race you to Puckaterry and back!”
“Puckaterry?” I asked, having never heard of the town. “Where’s Puckaterry?”
“You know,” he replied, “Dat place haffway ’tween heah and hell!”

Never walk alone
Dear Smiley: Watching all the people walking/driving while talking on their cell phones has made me wonder: Who did they talk to before cell phones — themselves?
Being of an age that remembers no cell phones (to be honest, I remember party lines), I have trouble understanding the need to be in constant contact with others.
Can you and your readers explain this to me?
