Rick Marshall comments on our sad story about the Louisiana Municipal Police Employee Retirement System standing to lose $24 million invested in a Texas golf resort:

“If only MPERS had used some forethought when investing in golf resorts, they would have invested in golf ball manufacturers instead.

“Why, if only half the golfers lose them the way I do, that money would never stop rolling in.”

Southern exposure

Bob Cancienne adds to our seminar on Southern accents:

“Way back when I was at LSU (over 50 years ago), the folks from north Louisiana would make comments about our Cajun accents.

“One day I asked one of our north Louisiana friends to pronounce the following words, which I wrote down: ‘Mary, marry and merry.’

“What he said sounded like ‘merry, merry and merry.’

“ ’Nuf said. …”

From Kansas with love

Gail Stevens says she and Pastor Gary Stevens, of the Coffeyville, Kan., street ministry thank folks from this area who sent beads and other items to the children of their town:

“Coffeyville was devastated by a horrible flood in July of 2007. Over 300 homes were totally destroyed and around 80 businesses. Coffeyville continues to struggle, and there are so many hurting people who quite frankly don’t know which way to turn.

“In June I wrote you to see if someone might have Mardi Gras beads to share with the children in Coffeyville.
