Don’t mess with tough teachers

Dear Smiley: I tutored reading at an elementary school last year, twice a week for an hour.

One time I helped the overrun, overwrought, underpaid librarian with a particularly wild class.

It included four fourth-grade boys, all smart-asses, ready for anything but a rawhide tough old teacher.

One of them looked at me and my wrinkles and gray hair and asked, “How old are you anyway?”

I looked him in the eye and answered, “I’m older than dirt!”

They all gaped at me and he had to ask, “How old is that?”

I leaned over and whispered, “You’re in the library — look it up!”

Dear Smiley: Almost every day for weeks there was a red rectangle over this part of Louisiana on the weather satellite picture, to show where severe weather is expected.

It will be nice when hurricane season is over and NOAA can put that rectangle back in Kansas where it belongs.

We’re baaack!
Dear Smiley:  I can’t believe I neglected to thank you and all the dedicated hard-working folks at your paper.

We were without the paper for a few days, and I realized I missed it much more than TV, so I was delighted when it started showing up in our driveway again beginning last Saturday.

(We got power back the same day, but I still prefer the newspaper to the television).
