Dudley Lehew has this addition to our “That’s What I Like About the South” series:
“I knew I was home when I returned to Mississippi after 25 years away, including 10 in the Frozen Nawth.
“In Boston, after eating breakfast at a diner and paying at the register, all I heard was ‘$4.95’ or whatever the price was. It was the proprietor’s only comment: no eye contact whatsoever.
“But when I paid the smiling lady at the cash register in Jackson, it was: ‘Ah sho hope you enjoyed your breakfast. It’s a beautiful mawnin’, ain’t it?’
“Then, noticing that I hadn’t cleaned my plate, adding, ‘Was something wrong? You didn’t eat all your breakfast. Was everything cooked OK?’
“And she wouldn’t complete the transaction until I explained that everything was just fine, and I simply had no more room for the other half of that quarter-pound ham slab.
“Then she smiled and said, ‘Here, take this, dahlin’, placing a peppermint candy in my hand. ‘Y’all come back soon, OK?’
“’I sure will, ma’am,’ I said with a big grin.
“Yes, I was back home. …”
Our own supermodel
Advocate editorial writer and columnist Danny Heitman has been selected as a celebrity model for the YWCA’s “You Win!” fund-raiser Aug. 21 at the Manship Theatre.
Danny feels this is an opportunity for the follicularly challenged to exhibit their sex appeal. (He claims Howie Mandel is his role model; I figured Vin Diesel.)
You can vote for our hairline-impaired model at http://batonrougeywca.org/models.html.
Information is available at (225) 383-0681.
