Dear Smiley: After raising three daughters, my husband and I are often tickled at the way our first-born grandson makes his way in his world.
I took Colin, 4, to a movie last week — his first experience in a theater.
As the previews started, he turned to me and said, “Lou-Lou, it too loud!”
I tried explaining to him that that is just how it is in a theater.
He then asked me, “Who has the memote?” (his word for remote).
Before I could explain the situation to him, he turned around, faced the audience that was sitting behind us, held his hands up and in a loud voice said, “ANYBODY GOT THE MEMOTE IN HERE? TURN IT DOWN!”
Needless to say, my niece, nephew and I cracked up!

On a clear day …
Dear Smiley: We went to Natchez, Miss., the past July 4.
As we were swimming, my daughters (14 years and up) and a friend suddenly looked up at the sky and proclaimed that rain was on the way.
I looked and saw nothing but a few little white wisps of clouds, and asked them why they thought it was going to rain.
They replied, “Look how dark blue the sky is!”
I laughed and informed them, “That is what the sky really looks like without the smog.”

That certain smile
Dear Smiley: Mel Prust’s line about starting each day with a smile to get it over with reminds me of the ancient origins of a couple of “facial expressions.”
