Tammy Smith, of Zachary, offers these memories from 11 years of LSU baseball games at Alex Box Stadium:
“My son Landon being taken into the LSU locker room by some players when he was about 4, and thinking the guys were ‘naked’ because they had on no shirts. They were playing pool; he thought that was cool.
“Landon in a body cast, having to go to the game in a wagon. He got a pair of batting gloves from an LSU player, and slept with them.
“Landon at Our Lady of the Lake for two weeks and having three LSU players come and play Nintendo with him. They said they missed him at the games, and could hear him at third base (his seat was at first base).
“Watching him roll his wheelchair out on the field for ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ on Kids Night.
“Watching him ‘run’ the bases after Sunday games.
“Being thankful to stadium marshals Billy, Ed, Bobby and Mr. Teddy for not kicking him out. You wouldn’t think a kid in a wheelchair could get in so much trouble.
“Seeing him go from watching every move the players make to watching every move the bat girls make.
“Seeing him spending more time in the student section than in the section with his parents (and learning some cheers he can no longer repeat).”
In the interest of full disclosure, I must report that Tammy is my daughter and Landon, who’s in a wheelchair due to spina bifida, is my grandson.
Cheesy gift
Our comments on offbeat Mother’s Day gifts caused Wayne to report on this one:
“The best one I’ve seen so far is the heart-shaped pizza offered by Papa Murphy’s on Corporate Boulevard.
“Nothing says lovin’ like something from the oven!”
Sweet gift
Speaking of moms and ovens, Gaye Morrison Sandoz, author of “Simply Big Cookies, Desserts and More,” shows how to make cookies for Mother’s Day at 8 a.m. Saturday on WAFB-TV.
