When I discovered Mildred P. Worrell’s “Southern Exposure” column in Country Roads magazine years ago, she became my favorite columnist.
She managed to capture all the joys and sorrows of growing up and remaining in the small-town South.
Mildred later moved on to The Watchman, the Clinton newspaper.
The Louisiana Press Association just named her column “Taking Liberties” winner of the Sam Hanna Award for first place in her division.
In a column discussing the award and the life of a columnist, Mildred scored considerable points with me by writing, “My heroes in the genre are Dave Barry, Smiley Anders, and the immortals, Lewis Grizzard and Molly Ivins.”
However, her next words cost her a few points: “I wish I could write half as well — except for Smiley, who has all the rest of us write his columns most of the time. No one could duplicate that gig.”
Well, yeah, it’s true, but…
Triple threat
Art Christy says, “I’m following with great interest the current move in the Legislature to ban hand-held phones while driving.
“Will it apply to everyone, even people with three arms? We have one here in Lafayette.”
He explains: “Every morning about a quarter to 8, the driver turns left from Kaliste Saloom onto Pinhook, cell phone in one hand, coffee in another and lipstick in the third.
“I won’t mention the driver’s gender or hair color.”
Clean teeth, empty head
J.C. Robillard of Port Allen wonders if toothpaste makers have doubts about their customers’ intelligence:
