Who needs “Survivor”?
Baton Rouge has its own reality show, starring Kevin Reilly Jr. of Lamar Advertising CEO; his wife, Winifred; Louisiana Nature Conservancy director Keith Ouchley of St. Francisville; and nine other daring souls.
They’ve been stranded on Palmyra Island, a tiny atoll 1,000 miles south of Hawaii, since Saturday. The group, associated with The Nature Conservancy, got stuck there when their plane had engine trouble.
It wasn’t exactly a Robinson Crusoe (or even a Tom Hanks) story — the island has electricity, cabins and supplies.
His brother Sean says Kevin has been e-mailing and using a satellite phone, and that “his biggest complaint so far is running out of bone-fishing line.”
The Baton Rouge survivors will be flown out on another plane, and expect to be home by Sunday.
Who won the games?
Jo-Anne Harris, “Queen Mother of the Ruby Ramblers,” heads one of the Red Hat Society clubs in town.
They’re composed of ladies of a certain age who don red hats and purple dresses and proceed to party down.
Says Queen Mother Jo-Anne: “We had been planning to celebrate the society’s 10th birthday Tuesday with a party at the Sherwood Forest Chuck E Cheese’s.
“On Monday, we found out that an elementary school had booked a party on the same day at the same time!
“The 50-plus members of Holden Elementary School’s second-grade classes were well-behaved, and we were delighted when they sang Happy Birthday to us!
“We commend the children and their teachers. Their presence added to our enjoyment of the afternoon.”
Presidential pause
Davis C. Hotard, who on Thursday got off the interstate, where he’d been stuck since Tuesday (or so it seems), agrees with our Wednesday headline, “Bush makes stop in BR.”
