On the way we color our world

Baton Rouge hasn’t always been known as a town that celebrates diversity, so it’s heartening to get a note like this one from “Missing-My-Child Mom:”

“After growing up in Baton Rouge, my daughter moved from New Orleans to attend Loyola.

“Now she’s moved to Seattle to start a career in non-fiction writing.

“When I asked about Seattle, she said that besides being homesick, she found that ‘the place is too white.’

“I was surprised by the comment, but she went on to explain that if not for the ethnic restaurants, the city would have no color.

“I myself am happy to know that we may not be on top of most lists, but we accept and embrace everyone — and that is what gives us our color.”

Worse and worser
Kristen Spring says, “While watching TV one morning, a barrage of commercials played between morning shows.

“I couldn’t help but giggle and think of the childhood game, ‘What’s worser than worse?’ — my question being, ‘Plaintiff lawyers’ commercials or candidates’ commercials?’”

Got milk, cher?
Ronnie Stutes comments on a reader’s mention of legislators and a “state drink:”

“Actually, the bill (it failed) was to make the Sazerac the official state cocktail, not the official state drink. In fact, there is already an official state drink, adopted in 1983.

“The pertinent law is R.S. 49:170, which reads in its entirety: ‘There shall be an official state drink. The official state drink shall be milk.’”

Musical interlude
When Bert Broussard asked who recalled the famous song on the old Bengal Lounge jukebox, I figured it might be a dirty one.

Sure enough, at Earth Day a reader mentioned a song so off-color I can’t even hint at the lyrics.
