When we were stamp collectors

Vernon Yielding reminds us of bygone days, when consumers factored in the availability of trading stamps before choosing a retailer:

“In the late ’60s as my wife and I were driving to north Louisiana to visit her parents, I noticed we had three-fourths of a tank of gasoline.

“I was stopping at a station for a fill-up when she said, ‘Don’t stop there, they don’t give S&H Green Stamps!’

“The same happened when I was going to stop in Natchez.

“We began to run out of towns and gas. At 1 a.m. we coasted to the side of the road. I could see a light about two miles down the road.

“The station loaned me a gasoline can, and gave me S&H stamps, which I stuck on her forehead!”

(Vernon, I’m sure that’s not the end of the story … where did SHE stick them after that?)

Pot meets kettle
Walt Eldredge says our seminar on old sayings reminds him of the one about the pot calling the kettle black:

“For people who haven’t heard it, it means being a hypocrite.

“Which reminds me, how about those guys in the Louisiana Legislature who are accusing science teachers of lacking ‘critical thinking skills and logical analysis!’”

Battle cry
Barbara Odom says you can “experience the sights and sounds of the Civil War” at the re-enactment of the Battle of Jackson Crossroads in Jackson Saturday and Sunday. Check out http://www.battleofjacksoncrossroads.org.

(By the way, Barbara won’t tell me who won the battle — says the only way to find out is by going to Jackson …)

Arresting development
Oh, great — now I’m in trouble with the police!
