Dear Smiley: I was doing some family research when I came across an article in the Bedford, Pa., Gazette of Oct. 23, 1903.
A distant cousin of mine, Christopher Snell, was running for “poor director.”
His ad in the paper said that he had “resided all his life in Bedford County. Mr. Snell is poor himself and if elected will sympathize with the unfortunates under his care. What is needed in a poor director is honesty, judgment, patience and kindness.”
I know for a fact that he was not born in Bedford County, and he was hardly poor. He was the owner and operator of the American Hotel in Everett, Pa.
Gee, I thought deceitful politicians were only a recent plague.
By the way, he lost. I wonder why?

True to our brew
Dear Smiley: I can hardly believe what I read in your paper!
The politician who authored the bill to make a Sazerac the state drink certainly does not know the people of his great state!
Everybody knows that the drink of choice is BEER — any kind!

That special Place
Dear Smiley: I can’t help but respond to the message asking who remembered “The Place Next Door.”
My friends and I spent many hours between the Bengal and The Place Next Door.
If we happened to have a special date, TPND was the place to be — sitting on the floor with pillows around, swinging the hanging ashtrays, and drinking out of tiki mugs.
But if we really wanted to party The Bengal was our place.
