Rosetta: Hurdles could arise in search

The good news for LSU is that there’s absolutely no time limit on how long a coaching search should take.

If the school’s powerbrokers wanted, they could stretch the process out as long as they want to, especially with the 2008 recruiting class already signed and ostensibly committed to the Tigers.

But the longer the search takes, more stumbling blocks are likely to pop up.

That’s apparently already been the case and now it’s up the LSU brain trust to either fish or cut bait.

Right now, if nothing else changes, the LSU job is the second best available job on the market — behind only Indiana.

That could, and probably will, change quickly and dramatically, though.

If California dumps Ben Braun and/or Oklahoma State pulls the plug on Sean Sutton’s tenure, the LSU job loses some luster in the market place.

Those two jobs are arguably on equal footing with LSU and probably considerably better in some ways.

Something else to keep in mind is that while the LSU job might have a lot of appeal to the mass market, it isn’t the perfect or most desired fit for every individual.

For most basketball coaches, the right fit has a lot to do with where he would be most comfortable — whether it be old stomping grounds or a place where basketball is a major player.

The chance to win big and quickly is at the top of most aspiring coaches’ priority lists. That keeps LSU in contention for a lot of coaches, because the Tigers have the right ingredients in place to bounce back strongly next season.

But there may be stronger draws in a lot of other areas for those same coaches on LSU’s radar.

Perceived frontrunner Anthony Grant of Virginia Commonwealth likely has an eye on the Tigers gig because he knows the Southeastern Conference so intimately.
