These are the salad days for Les Miles. Literally.
He spoke to a small group of LSU beat reporters Wednesday, apologetically tearing into a boxed salad that had been brought in for him. Somewhere between grilled chicken and yet more grilling about Ryan Perrilloux, Miles waved in youngest daughter Macy Grace for a quick kiss.
Football coaches often eat and steal moments with their families on the fly, even this time of year.
Of course, not every meal is so hurried. Monday night, Miles was in New Orleans, dining at Commander’s Palace alongside President Bush and Gov. Bobby Jindal along with Drew Brees, Chris Paul and a host of other dignitaries and Republican rooters.
Miles didn’t go into great detail about the menu, but one assumed Les and “Dubya” didn’t dine out of to-go boxes.
Miles was asked jokingly if the president remembered him from LSU’s visit to the White House just two weeks earlier.
Of course Bush did, though he and probably even the newly elected Jindal would like to have Miles’ approval rating right now in the wake of LSU’s latest BCS national championship.
Now the task of staying there. Like a politician in his last term, there’s no where to go when you’re No. 1 but down.
More highlights from Miles’ media gathering:
“Right now we’re finishing the (spring) semester academically. We’re doing a good job in the classroom, and for the most part, it appears we’ll have a great semester. We’ll take a break from class, work out and show up the first week of June.”
On Perrilloux’s availability for summer workouts:
“I want all the players who will be playing in the fall to be there and going like hell. I want every quarterback involved, including (freshman) Jordan Jefferson.”
Is Miles concerned about the quarterbacks?
