India averages between 250 to 300 sunny days per year.
The journal Human Ecology reports solar energy could improve the quality of life for rural and tribal households.
A study analyzed the benefits of solar photovoltaic lanterns in impoverished households; the International Energy Agency predicts the nation’s demand for energy will double by 2020.
Solar energy could ease the demand by contributing 5,000 kWh annually.
The study focused on one district, where 72 percent of the population consists of tribal peoples; 70 percent of the rural villages are connected to a power grid.
Often the grid is shut down to reroute power to major cities with electricity only available from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fastcast: Sunny, dry.
