A new magazine, Miller-McCune, highlighted major floods in the U.S. and how rivers in Vermont are doing what the Atchafalaya wasn’t allowed to do — flow where they want.
Contributing editor, Ryan Blitstein, showcased the Great Flood of 1951, caused by rainfall from the Plains that brought the Kansas River to flood levels in two states. The 1972 Black Hills-Rapid City, N.D., Flood caused 238 deaths.
Continual rainfall generated exceptional flood levels in nine states, breaching levees along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, becoming The Great Flood of 1993. Finally, the California floods of 1995 found an accumulation of vegetation along the Russian River bringing water levels to record highs.
