Pat Shingleton for October 24, 2009
Friday’s article described the October 23, 1947, event where fish fell from the sky, covering 80,000 square feet of Marksville. As noted in previous Advocate articles, there have been weather events where snails, turtles and other critters have dropped from the sky; not the case in Marksville. The weather was mild with reports of fog and light breezes on the day the fish fell. One witness reported small tornadoes and dust devils the day before, yet no strong thunderstorms accompanied the fish. Meteorologists have reviewed the data but remain stumped as to what caused the Great Fish Fall in Marksville. Other similar incidents were reported in England in 1918, when a rain of eellike fish fell near Sunderland.
Fastcast: Beautiful.
Sunny, with a high near 69 degrees. North wind between 5 and 10 mph. Tonight, clear, with a low around 44 degrees. Calm wind.
