The disposal of waste, be it a landfill or storage container for nuclear waste, likely will be a problem for future generations. Our own salt domes provide a natural storage facility for emergency oil reserves. The Scottish Center for Carbon Storage has found another area for future use: saline aquifers. They contain porous rocks identified in numerous caverns at the bottom of the North Sea. Scientists said they are capable of storing carbon dioxide for up to 200 years. The study contends they have greater storage potential than the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany combined. The Scottish government said the aquifers can hold all of Europe’s emissions into the next century.
