Pat Shingleton for October 21, 2009
I noticed an advertisement in The Advocate promoting a tree sale this weekend. After the massive tree destruction from Gustav last year, new trees are of great benefit in the future. Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted a study of the benefits of trees. They verified well-placed trees can reduce energy cost and atmospheric carbon. The study found trees on the west and south sides of a home cut summertime electricity use by 5 percent. Trees on the north side increase it and trees on the east side had no effect. The distance of the trees from a home also was a factor. The study in Sacramento will be adjusted for other regions and seasons.
