Pat Shingleton for Oct. 19, 2009
On Thursday, Atlantic tropical cyclone activity reached its peak and will continue a major downturn after Tuesday. In 1995, researchers determined from the last half of October through the end of November, an average of 1.7 named storms occur. The research noted 0.8 hurricanes and 0.3 intense hurricanes form on average. So far this season, there have been seven tropical storms and two major hurricanes. Tropical Storm Claudette was the only storm this season to hit the U.S., making landfall in Florida on Aug. 16. Since 1960, late-season hurricanes have included: Omar and Paloma in 2008, Wilma and Beta in 2005, Michelle in 2001. We remember Hurricane Lili in October 2002 that tracked west of Lafayette. Fastcast: Warmer.
