Pat Shingleton for October 17, 2009
Snow in western Pennsylvania before Halloween is rare; not the case in other sections of the state, especially near the Appalachian Mountains. Traditionally the seasonal change offers beautiful days that include blue skies and crisp temperatures. Other days have episodes that include cold and rain. In northern states, autumn leaves are hitting their peak and offering beautiful displays. Last Thursday, meteorologist Chris Stevens, a Penn State grad, located a release that included a “snow loading alert,” issued by the university for this weekend. Officials asked students to be careful when walking near trees. Friday’s 4- to 6-inch wet snowfall on leaf laden trees snapped branches with snow forecast for homecoming today.
Fastcast: Almost nippy.
Mostly sunny, with a high near 64 degrees. North winds between 10 and 15 mph. Tonight, partly cloudy, with a low around 42 degrees. North winds between 5 and 15 mph.
