Tropical Storm Marco made landfall Tuesday morning northwest of Veracruz, Mexico. As the 13th named storm of the season, it was downgraded to a tropical depression by afternoon. Marco is identified as a “midget” tropical cyclone; they are difficult to classify with satellite estimates. Because of its strength and size, there were no more mission flights from the hurricane hunter aircraft. Dr. Jeff Masters’ Wunderblog says midget tropical cyclones are rare in the Atlantic and common in the western Pacific, due to monsoon troughs that spin-up tiny cyclones. Tropical Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin, Australia, on Christmas Day 1974 with Category 4 winds, killing 71 with $5 billion in damages.
