Pat Shingleton for July 23
Agence France-Presse reports the start of Japan’s highly anticipated cherry blossom season is determined by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Since 1955, the agency manually weighes each growing bulb to determine the season and since 1996 has used a mathematical formula. This piqued my interest while consuming sweet cherries. I remember, as a kid, vanilla ice cream mixed with sweet cherries was known as White House ice cream. In anticipation of the festival in Japan, officials watch the Somei-Yoshino cherry tree twice a day to not miss the opening of six flowers to identify the change of seasons. Similar to weather fronts, the agency releases maps of blossom fronts that bloom in various areas. Fastcast: Soggy, not as sticky.
