Pat Shingleton for July 13
Hurricane Bertha will slide southeast of Bermuda on Monday afternoon. On average, Bermuda is either brushed or hit with a hurricane every 2.58 years. Two years ago, Hurricane Florence passed 60 miles west of the island with 90 mph winds and limited damage. On September 25, 1987, Hurricane Emily made a direct hit with 125 mph winds causing millions in damage and 70 injuries, and I was there. My wife attended an advertising conference in Hamilton. The hotel-conference center included a golf course. As I anticipated “teeing-it-up,” I monitored the progress of the storm by regularly checking with WBRZ. After its passage, every tree on the course was uprooted, I played anyway. Fastcast: Staying Hot.
