Tsunami is Japanese for “harbor wave.” In shallow waters, the impact of one is severe. Caused by undersea earthquakes, waves race across the ocean at speeds greater than 500 mph. In December 2005, officials deployed Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting Tsunami detectors off Thailand’s Phuket Island. The detectors were installed as an early warning network. Now officials think the devices were deliberately removed. Representatives of Indonesia’s marine technology research center suspect the cable holding the sensors to buoys were cut. They say the depth at which the steel line was compromised was 150 meters below the surface with a buoy designed to withstand tension force of up to 6 tons.
