Pat Shingleton for May 2, 2008
I stood corrected when meteorologist Chris Stevens commented that the Pineapple Express sometimes extends to Maine. I thought it stalled around Arkansas. The Pineapple Express, also known as the Pineapple Connection, originates near the Hawaiian Islands where a continual flow of moisture extends to numerous sites along the Pacific coast. The southern branch of the jet stream drives the Express and always hugs a frontal boundary during its journey. In 2005 it battered Southern California causing mud slides, flooding and 9 inches of rain in the desert location of Morongo Valley. In 2006, Olympia, Wash., experienced strong winds and flooding. In British Columbia, the Pineapple Express generated heavy snowfall.
Fastcast: Soggy, showery.
