Canada will host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. For the Nordic skiing events, officials will use the expertise of professors from the University of Utah. They will train forecasters in the science of logging and predicting snow temperatures. The Associated Press reports John Horel, a professor at the university’s Department of Meteorology, will head the team to better understand the temperature on the snow surface so participants and coaches can determine the amount and type of wax for skis. Sensors will be spaced on the course to provide a temperature grid to learn how snow conditions will change throughout the day and night. The data will be shared with all teams.
