Pat Shingleton for April 24, 2008
Tuesday evening’s storm not only delivered an intense lightning display but also a batch of hail. The stormy ingredients were in place: a high of 90 that tied the record for the date, sea breezes that enhanced the moisture field, an upper level trough, cool air aloft. Pictures received from viewers in Broadmoor, Sherwood Forest, Old Hammond, O’Neal and Millerville noted hailstones ranging from pea and marble to golf ball. The severe thunderstorm was isolated to East Baton Rouge Parish with no rain reported here at the station. The largest hailstone ever recovered in the United States was a 7-inch wide chunk of ice almost as large as a soccer ball that hit south-central Nebraska in June 2003.
Fastcast: Warm.
