Hydrologists expect a crest on the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge at 42 feet April 21. To relieve levee pressure, the Bonne Carré Spillway will be opened today. As mentioned in a previous Weather News article, scientists speculate that 15,000 years ago, 50 floods deluged an area from Missoula, Mont., to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The Clark Fork River is near the Idaho-Montana border; before water blasted it, continental glaciers protected this area. Once the glaciers melted after the Ice Age, 500 cubic miles of water carried boulders over hundreds of miles carving out ravines and creating huge waterfalls. Congress is considering the creation of the first National Geologic Trail in the area.
